Personality Darwin has grown a lot since he last stayed in the Armonia Institute. He was a very odd, reclusive bird, with no cares other than furthering his studies in entemology. Now that he has taken time away to really think and learn, he's discovered there's so much more than his studies. He's become a smarter, but more open Swellow, though is still learning how to properly interact with others. He's still very gentle and careful, but he's determined, too. He strives to do his best in all things-in school and socially, like making friends. He's very proud of how far he's come, though he still is easily startled and can get embarrassed pretty easily. He still enjoys sharing his thoughts and discoveries with others-even if you didn't ask about them. And don't even get him started on his girlfriend....
History Darwin was always a curious fellow, even in his early years as a Tailow. While his older brother did what his father called "normal boy activities," like playing in dirt and wrestling, Darwin loved to explore his backyard, looking at the plants that grew there... but he especially loved to watch the bugs. They fascinated him throughout his life; every day he'd go into the backyard to watch them, particularly the Wurmple evolution line. He just loved how different each evolution was, but all of them were amazing.
Darwin's father didn't approve of this behavior. He thought it was a silly waste of time, and he wasn't going to grow up to be a proper young man. He tried to get Darwin to play catch with him, and to wrestle with his bother, but he simply wasn't interested. He just spent his time sitting in their backyard, watching the bugs crawl around and fly through the trees.
Growing up, Darwin's curiosity only grew stronger. He spent more time studying and sketching the bugs he saw than doing his actual schoolwork, and because of that, his grades weren't very good. His social life suffered as well... all his conversations were related to bugs, it started to bother people, and everyone teased him about it. They thought he was silly, and his hobby was a waste of time.
His parents were concerned, and tried their best to keep him from going outside. They put locks on the back door, they kept watch on the front door, but somehow he always found a way to distract himself with bugs-he read books, he went over his sketches, he even kept a few bugs in jars in his room. His parents weren't sure what they were going to do about his obsession. They were worried that he wouldn't make any friends, and that he'd grow up being some kind of hermit.
Then, they found out about Armonia. This school, they thought, would be a good idea. Though they were sad they would have to send him away, they hoped that a change in scenery would help him focus on his schoolwork-and not on their own backyard. So, they sent him off, and asked him to write about his experience there every week, but not write a thing related to bugs.
Darwin just saw it as an opportunity to study new bugs in a new place.
After spending some time in the Armonia Institute, he realized that in order to further his studies, he needed to broaden his enviroment to find more insects to study. So, on his own, he decided to leave and explore the world a bit. He went to other regions, though never stayed long, always hearing about other species in other places, and eagerly went in search of them. After a while of doing this, Darwin started to feel a bit... empty. He wasn't quite sure why. He had studied so many bugs and explored so many new places, and yet, he still felt like something was missing. He couldn't quite figure out what it was, and ended up staying in a small town in Sinnoh-Snowpoint City.
Living in Snowpoint City was interesting for Darwin-for one thing, it was a lot colder than he was used to, but it was also quieter. It was a perfect place to think. He stayed in a small hotel run by a Frosslass and her only daughter, a Weavile. He stayed there for a while, trying to figure out what he was missing, and at the same time got to know the two running the hotel-especially the Weavile, named Elsa. The two bonded after a while, and for a short amount of time, he began to forget what it was he needed to figure out. He and Elsa spent so much time together, and soon enough they were basically a couple. Darwin finally started to feel content, and thought maybe, just maybe, this was where he belonged.
And then that nagging thought came back. Elsa insisted that he was just making himself paranoid, that he was fine and that they were happy, but Darwin just couldn't shake it. He knew... that he had to go back. He needed to finish what he started, back at the Armonia Institute. The thought of abandoning his studies there, and knowing that he had left his friends without even telling them where he was going, it was unbearable. He promised Elsa that he would return to her, and when he did, they would be together forever. Elsa was very hesitant to let him leave, but she obliged, knowing that it would make him happy. So Darwin returned, still keeping contact with Elsa through letters and phonecalls. But he had to finish what he started.
